Today’s tutorial is a part of DIY Halloween pom pom plushie series! So, learn how to make three Halloween yarn pompoms: a jack-o’-lantern pumpkin, an eyeball, and a skull. Using a plastic pompom maker, wrap different colored yarn strands in specific counts and positions following a diagram. For each design, wrap black, white, orange, green, or purple yarn across both arches.

Cut the yarn loops along the middle groove, tie the center tightly with yarn, and remove the maker. Finally, use tweezers to shape the facial details and trim the yarn with scissors into neat, round Halloween characters.

Difficulty Level

  • Level: Intermediate

  • Why: Making basic pompoms is simple, but creating internal picture patterns requires following exact wrap counts, layering colored yarn in precise spots, pulling ends through with a crochet hook, and carefully sculpting the round shapes with sharp scissors without cutting the design away.

Materials & Techniques

  • Note on Folds: No origami or paper folds are used in this project because it is a yarn craft. Instead, it uses yarn wrapping, central knot tying, and 3D scissor trimming.

  • Materials:

    • Pompom maker tool (Clover 45 mm yellow maker)

    • Yarn in colors: Blood Orange, Pure Black, Kelly Green, Grass Green, Paper White, Pansy Purple

    • Sharp precision scissors

    • Small crochet hook (for pulling yarn ends)

    • Tweezers (for arranging yarn fibers)

    • Pattern diagram guide
